Nema Project, Mozambique

Children are the first to suffer at the hands of poverty and Guludo in Mozambique is amongst the poorest area you’ll find on the planet.

Children are lucky to survive long enough to reach their fifth birthday: One third of their friends won’t. These children are dying needlessly: It’s simply criminal that in 2011 children are left vulnerable to malaria, malnutrition, HIV and cholera without access to safe water. To top it off, school is generally out of reach for them, too.

The Nema Project uses a holistic, community-lead approach in its health, education, enterprise and environmental projects to relieve poverty and empower local communities in a sustainable way. The local communities are considered partners rather than beneficiaries, and help to choose, run and plan the projects themselves.  Projects are designed to avoid dependence and encourage sustainability, so that the locals can fund them entirely themselves after a few years.

The people living in the communities want to give their children a brighter future and this new approach has turned life around for the village of Guludo. Now other villages are welcoming Nema and supporting their initiatives.

Through our partnership with Nema, over 800 children receive a nutritious meal every school day through our school feeding program, thousands of children now have access to clean water and sleep safely under a mosquito net. 'Nema' is a local word which means “deep joy when suffering ends”.

I am excited to introduce this project to you. Check out the pages, galleries and videos and see why it is one of my favourites. Global Angels has brought 'Nema' to thousands of children in this project.

Please Step Up and give to empower thousands more.

Step Up, be an Angel...
