The Hamilton, in Freetown is a new project which helps 40 street children who had been living and working on the cities rubbish tips. Almost all of the children have never been inside a classroom and would never have had the chance without intervention. All 40 children live inside four homes built in late 2009.
The goal for this project is to replicate the work Kamakwie, creating a new Children’s Community Village running in a self sustaining manner through local enterprise. The aim is also to develop micro businesses and training opportunities for the children, especially the older teenagers as they graduate secondary school.
We are currently raising funds to help the Hamilton Project get shaded basic building in the centre area of our village for the children to eat, play and study; a A basic single roomed building to store cooking equipment and for the care workers to cook; and an extra shower block for the children to use. The total cost will be £2,400.
Reintegration House – An extra home to be built for the older children we help, who are making the first steps to move towards an independent life.
Cost - £5000
Minibus to Sierra Leone – One of our great successes has been sending minibuses to Sierra Leone that we pack full of valuable items for the children. On arrival they are used as a taxi service which creates a daily income, used to cover costs of feeding and wages.
By sending over another bus we are able to completely sustain our work in Hamilton through local means.
Cost – £5000
Medical Motorbike – Run in a similar way to that of the minibus, we purchase a motorbike in Sierra Leone and run it as a taxi. We then invest all of the profits from this business into a savings account to cover medical costs of any of the children when they are sick.
Cost – £1200
Free Primary School – One of the greatest problems facing orphaned children or children from the poorest families is access to school. Small fees block large numbers of children from ever going to school. In the Hamilton area we plan to provide absolutely free education to hundreds of children. Our school in Kamakwie is a glowing example of how successful this can be in getting children into the classrooms.
Costs are as follows –
Land – £3000
Building and Labour - £22000
Desk, tables and equipment – £1500
Primary school total cost – £26500
