Just £5 gives one person in Africa safe drinking water for at least 10 years through our partner projects, and very often that includes their animals as well.

The statistics are clear. Polluted water kills.
- Lack of safe water and sanitation is the world’s single largest cause of illness. The toll on children is especially high. About 4,500 children die each day from unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation facilities. Countless others suffer from poor health, diminished productivity and missed opportunities for education. (Souce: Unicef )
- Over 90% of deaths from diarrhoeal diseases in the developing world today occur in children under 5 years old. Improved drinking water and sanitation services and better hygiene behaviour especially by mothers are crucial in cutting child mortality. (Source: WHO/Unicef JMP http://www.wssinfo.org/essentials/water2.html).
- From ages 5-14 years, the impact of disease and access to safe water causes children, especially girls, mostly in Africa and Asia, to miss school. Without regular access to education, these children have little hope of escaping poverty. (Source: WHO/Unicef JMP).
- 42,000 deaths occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions. Many of these diseases are preventable. 90% of these deaths are to children aged under five years old.
- Today 2.5 billion people, including almost one billion children, live without even basic sanitation. Every 20 seconds, a child dies as a result of poor sanitation. That's 1.5 million preventable deaths each year. (Source: Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC))
- Every year, over 1.8 million people die of diarrheoal diseases (including cholera) and 1.3 million succumb to malaria (2004 figures). Of all the deaths attributable to diarrhoeal diseases in developing countries, 90% are of children under 5 years old, vs. only 9% in developed countries. (Source WHO/Unicef JMP)
