Micro Businesses for Older Children
These micro businesses will provide essential opportunities to our older children once they have finished secondary school. Children from both projects in Kamakwie and Freetown would benefit from this.
- Shop to sell cold drinks and act as a small general store.
- Barber Shop offering haircuts to the public.
- Basic Beach Hut for selling local food and cold drinks.
- Cinema Hut, a small hut showing films to the public
Total Business Costs – £3000
Minibus
One of our great successes has been sending Minibuses to Sierra Leone from the UK, that are packed full of valuable items for the children. On their arrival they are used as a taxi service which creates a daily income that to cover the costs of feeding all the children and wages for local staff.
Bone more bus would make the project completely sustainable through local means.
Cost – £5000
Medical Motorbike
Run in a similar way to that of the minibus. The motorbike would be purchased in Sierra Leone and run as a taxi. All the profits from this venture are to be invested into a savings account to cover medical costs of any of the children when they are sick.
Cost – £1200

Freetown Children’s Village, Sierra Leone
Freetown Children's Village is a project helping 40 street children, who had been living and working on the cities rubbish tips.
Countless street children find themselves facing a continuous battle each and every day on the hustling streets of the city. Many had lost parents during the war and had lived for years with the street as their home, sleeping in the markets at night or in old rusted boats and sheds. Many of these children work during the day on rubbish tips, some find money by carrying bags for people and others are left with no choice but to scavenge, beg or turn to crime and drugs. Almost all of the children have never been inside a classroom and would never have had the chance without intervention.
This project is creating a second Children's Community Village, replicating the existing Kamakwie model. The village aims to become self sustaining through developing local enterprise, micro business and training opportunities for the children, especially the older teenagers as they graduate secondary school.
Resources we are raising funds for include:
Reintegration House – An extra home to be built for the older children we help, who are making the first steps to move towards an independent life.
Minibus – One of our great successes has been sending minibuses to Sierra Leone packed full of valuable items for the children. The buses are used as a taxi service, operated by the teenagers still living in the village after they have finished their education. This creates a daily income, wages for the drivers and food for the children in the village.
Medical Motorbike – Run in a similar way to that of the minibus, motorbikes are purchased in Sierra Leone and run as taxis. Profits from this micro-business are invested into a savings account to cover medical costs for the children in the village.
Free Primary School - One of the greatest problems facing orphaned children or children from the poorest families is access to school. Small fees block large numbers of children from ever going to school. The existing school in Kamakwie is a glowing example of how successful providing free primary education can be.
