Strakka Racing Driver Nick Leventis – World Record Everest Skydive

The date for our amazing Ambassador Nick Leventis’ Everest Skydive is drawing closer and closer! His Strakka Racing team have already had an amazing season with their record achievements at Le Mans and amazing win in the Hungaroring 1000 Kilometres! They are great supportors of Global Angels – their HPD racecar has carried our logo all season, and it is embroidered on the driver’s race suits!

Nick will be attempting the highest Everest tandem skydive this coming October, in the name of Global Angels and refugee kids on the Thai-Burma border – he aims to raise £50,000! What a brilliant Ambassador he is.

Nick and his wife Sophie became Angel Ambassadors earlier in the year when they travelled to Mae Sot in northern Thailand and made a short film about the refugee children living on the Thai-Burma there, all in need of our help.

“Our hearts went out to the refugee children we met there. Tens of thousands of children live in harsh conditions in shacks or squalid boarding houses, with too little food, and rudimentary schools. It is hard to believe that they are safer and better cared for in Thailand than in their own country, but they have fled a brutal government and an endless civil war. Some are with their parents, but many are orphanss. We met one girl whose mother had been killed by a landmind and her father shot by the Burmese army. Some children have run away after being constripted as soldiers, porters or human minesweepers. Burma has more child soldiers than any other country in the world.” - Nick Leventis

Bear Grylls and team have now set off on their Northwest Passage expedition this weekend! How exciting!
They have reached Resolute Bay, one of the furthest outposts in the Arctic, and the must-pass-thru location for anyone attempting to reach the North Pole from Canada!

Bear gave this update in his daily blog…

“Summary is, we’re having a blast. Trip of a lifetime. Lots of joking and laughing, and then the occasional very serious moment which keeps us on alert all the time. Everyone is in great spirits. [...] Tomorrow we’re departing early. Not at sunrise, because that’s pretty much right after sunset. We’ve got our longest day yet in front of us, and all we know for certain is that there is a large ice field just outside of Resolute Bay that I can see from the window of our motel. But we’re rested and ready for it.”

Reaching out to vulnerable children who have been abandoned or orphaned, this project has created an environment with a more family based approach. Many of the children lost their families in the recent civil war and  spent over 6 years living in desperate conditions on the streets of Sierra Leone before being welcomed into the community.  By creating an Orphan Village that is a self sufficient community, long term benefits are brought  to the futures of hundreds of children. Currently, over 100 children are  provided with shelter, education,  training opportunities, care and support.

Training in skills such as bee keeping, farming, sewing and small business management help the children learn and develop capabilities that will allow them to support themselves and their community in the future. Providing long term sustainable projects is a vital of the vision of the Community Village and funds given are used towards that end.

We have been privileged to partner with Steve and his team as they have pioneered in Kamakwie and have provided the funds to build their new school, solar panels for electricity, replace the home that burnt down, provide two vans,  mattresses, rice for planting and more.

Last year, 117 children from Kamakwie were sponsored in our Feed A Child Programme. Please give to this project and help resource this project.

Step Up and be an Angel…

One of the most exciting successes of this project is that the primary and secondary school for the street kids and orphans in the project has become number 22 in the Kenyan league tables with students taking highest levels in the nation right across the arts, sports and academic subjects. The sports team are representing East Africa. Many students from the program have been sponsored and qualified in universities in Kenya and around the world in medical, educational, agricultural and sustainability fields.

Students are also offered apprenticeships in building, agriculture, mechanics, hairdressing, tailoring and organic farming. The builders get their training building new homes for the street kids and orphans. So far Global Angels has provided funds for three homes to be built for over 100 children to live in. The organic farming apprentices gain EU qualifications while growing the french beans in the green houses, the rich variety of vegetables and fruit supplying the 1,000 strong community with food and also help reforest Kenya with native trees specially adapted to the climate.

In the photo above, Daniel and Rohan interview a young man who built the stairway they are sitting on. Once a street child himself, he was educated in the project and is now teaching apprentices.

Street kids and orphans don’t have parents or a government to provide their education. We are their chance.

We have just about completed a new water project in Kenya providing water for around 6,000 people in tiny villages in a remote part of the Kajiado district of the Masai Mara amongst the Esiloya Masai community.

Step up, be an Angel.. and give children clean safe water to drink…

Long term droughts over the last 10 years have caused severe problems for the families in this region. Collaborating with local families and government, we have partnered with Child’s Life Kenya and EWADI to provide school buildings, education for school age children and water for the whole community and nearby villages.

Providing nutritious school meals for the children each school day guarantees most children will attend school. The boys who would normally be tending the animals and the girls who would normally be married off by 12 years are much more likely able to continue their education.

The first ever secondary school in the area, providing for 350 children between 14-18 years of age has been completed with Global Angels funding. The new water well providing for 6,000 in the wider catchment area is almost completed. Providing education and water to a community with partners who are facilitating development on a holistic model is part of our sustainable strategy.

All it takes is £15 to provide water for one person for 20 year through the Global Angels water program!

There has been a devastating drought in Kenya for the last 4 years so that almost 10 million people were on the verge of starvation in the rural areas before the rains broke through early this year. As a result of the length of the drought, most of the poor have lost all their livestock and are without means to start new herds. Over the next year they will still need help to feed their children.

Global Angels Board members, Molly and Daniel Bedingfield, have recently returned from filming in Kenya with some very exciting news after visiting two projects which have received funding from Global Angels. The projects will provide safe, clean water for 108,000 people and all their animals for the next 20 years!!!

We are now providing water for around 6,000 people in tiny villages in a remote part of the Kajiado district of the Masai Mara and in Northern Kenya, we have funded a water purification project for a community 102,000 people. Water is pumped from the River Thika to the purification plant and after being filtered and cleansed, safe clean water is pumped through pipes to the surrounding rural community.

Our on-the-ground partner, MCF, also cares for more than 2,000 street kids and orphans. Over this next year they are also providing an emergency feeding program for 3,000 school children from the surrounding farming community.

Additionally they provide education on sustainable farming for the 100,000 local community in the region. As one of the main providers of organic French beans to Europe, MCF is a leader in sustainable charity projects in Africa, and is able to cover 40% of the running costs for the children’s home… a remarkable feat!

Global Angels and MCF are currently planning the next phase of development in the region. We would love to engage your support to help us provide further access to fresh water for the local community and emergency feeding for 3,000 school children over the next year till the farming community can recover from the effects of the drought.

Just £10 gives two person in rural Kenya safe drinking water for 20 years!

£10 will provide a vitamin and protein rich lunch for a school child in this emergency project every school day for two months.

One of our most exciting projects is the Nema Project in Guludo, Mozambique. Until now, the mortality rate for children under five years in the Guludo area has been as high as 35% due to water borne diseases and unsafe drinking water.

In 2008 we built and refurbished water wells to provide safe drinking water to 15,000 children and their communities in Guludo, Mozambique. Previously the community shared water holes with animals. If you saw Slumdog Millionaire, you know the story for many children on the streets of Mumbai, India.

We have teamed up with human rights charity, Jubilee Campaigns, who rescue and rehabilitate orphaned and abandoned children from the red light district, Mumbai, India. This important work provides an escape for these children from the life of slavery in the commercial sex industry.

Jubilee currently sustains 4 homes outside Mumbai and a shelter in the heart of the red light district. Two residential homes now house over 100 children rescued from the red light district. The Aids home has been completed and is caring for over 50 children and it is such a privilege to provide this special home for children orphaned, trafficked or abandoned with HIV/AIDS. The Jubilee Shelter provides a safe sanctaury for children while their mothers work and the Halfway House for older girls who have left the residential homes, helping to regain independence while still being supported.

Deveraj and his team, literally rescue children and young people from brothels and give them a new home and life away from the commercial child sex industry and slavery. The children have either been abducted from their homes and sold into the sex industry or they are toddlers or very young children born to young prostitute woman who are desperate their children escape their “prison.”

They are nurtured in a safe and caring environment and given a new identity as “very loved and precious children” with a positive future. They all go to school, most go on to further education and many go on to university. All are given the opportunity to pursue careers and empowered to develop their potential in life.

The cycle has been broken!
Hard Rock Cafe partnered with us to support five young woman from the project to enter further education at universities and vocational courses.
