We are setting up a second branch of the Nema Foundation in Nacala. The Nema Foundation is based in Guludo in Northern Mozambique, where infant mortality is 30% and life expectancy is 38 years.
The Nema Foundation has won Best for Poverty Reduction at the World Travel Awards. Nema have an extraordinarily successful model. The main reasons for this are:
- The Guludo Beach Lodge covers all overheads (and will for the Nacala branch too) so that every penny of donations goes directly to the projects
- The villages Nema work with are partners, not just beneficiaries; community leaders and volunteers help design, plan and run the projects themselves
- Nema have a holistic approach, addressing all aspects that keep a community locked in poverty, and designing projects that cover, with much overlap, the broad areas of health, education, water, enterprise and environment
- Through working closely with the local communities Nema ensure they build on their existing structures; they also build community cohesion through the community involvement in the projects
Because the projects are chosen with the local community, we do not know what projects we will do until we meet with village leaders to decide, but examples of Nema's projects in Guludo include:
- Nema teach locals to give nutrition workshops for mothers with young children. Each workshop costs £10 and is for 6 mothers. The workshops teach about the nutritional value of food and how to make a life-saving porridge for sick children from accessible ingredients. By teaching locals to give the workshops, sustainability of the workshops is ensured. Mothers pay a small amount to attend, giving the teachers an income and ensuring only those who care and will listen attend the workshops.
- Nema install water points in the villages. As well as building the wells, a village Water Committee is set up, and Nema run workshops for the Committees teaching pump maintenance and safe care to prevent the spread of disease, so that the villages can independently run & maintain the pumps once they are set up. Each workshop costs £150, and they are run every 6 months
- Malaria (fevers' to the locals) is a major child killer, so Nema distribute mosquito nets and teach mothers how to use them effectively. Each one costs £6 and as a best estimate one life is saved for every 125 nets, putting the price of a life at £750
