Purnata Bhaven Project, Oasis, India Breaking the cycle of poverty
Mumbai has an estimated 6 million people living in dense, sprawling slums, some of which house between 100,000 to 150,000 people per square mile, living in appalling conditions. Many inhabitants are too poor even to be able to afford food.
The Purnata Bhaven project provides crucial health care, hygiene and HIV/Aids education and awareness programmes, along with provisions such as safe drinking water and sanitation.
Programmes for children and youth include:
-quality education
-vocational and life skills training to develop individual potential.
-pre-primary education for children at risk
-after school ‘homework clubs’ to help youths progress through
school
-outreach work amongst parents to help them value education and keep their children in school.
-computer clubs and training also provide skills to parents to ensure employability in the future.
