  Sunshine Center, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The Centre recently moved from an old and crowded house near a busy market to a new venue, which has large front and back yards for the children to run around in. The children absolutely love going there because it is a haven from the hot, dirty and dangerous streets. Each day has a different programme so there is always something new to learn.

The children coming to the Sunshine Centre often have a small sibling to care for as they work, and are unable to attend regular school as their families are totally dependent upon their meager incomes.

They are extremely vulnerable to exploitation by traffickers and paedophiles as they work each day in the streets.

The Sunshine Centre is making a long-term difference in the lives of these courageous children whilst building relationships with the child's parents to encourage regular attendance at the Centre.

Training and micro-enterprise programmes help these Cambodian families break the cycle of poverty.

A ration of dry food, such as flour or sugar, is also provided for families to compensate for loss of earnings during the two to three hours a child spends at the Centre. This is a real incentive for attendance and has dramatically increased the number of children coming to the Centre every day.

As these children are 'street children' and not in a formal school feeding programme it is possible that individual children may fluctuate on attendance, so sponsoring a child in this case would not be a specific child but represent one of the 80 child places in the project.
