There are estimated to be 150 million street children around the world (UN 2001). In Sub-Saharan Africa alone there are at least 48 million orphans (UN 2006).
- Half the children in the world (over 1 billion) suffer from severe deprivation of basic human needs and 30% (650 million) suffer from absolute poverty.
- Over half a billion children (27%) have no toilet facilities whatsoever.
Over 1.2 million children are kidnapped, sold or smuggled each year. (The Int. Labor Org)
Some of the most wonderful kids in the world live on the streets. Some street kids are orphaned, but many have parents who are too poor to send them to school or to provide them with daily food. These kids have to live on the streets or amongst rubbish dumps, scavenging for survival for themselves and often for siblings, too.
Millions of children live and work on the streets, without protection from traffickers, pedophiles, criminals and abusers. Millions of children do not have food or education, adequate shelter. All are vulnerable to the devices of criminal elements, abuse and exploitation.
The dynamic projects we have partnered with really are making a significant difference in the lives of thousands of orphans and street children.
